Black Hills & Badlands of South Dakota

Black Hills, Badlands and Lakes Association is the destination marketing organization for western South Dakota. They have a great website with tourism information for the region, and they wanted to make that information available in a convenient mobile format. We worked with them to plan the structure of their app and determine what content would work best from both their website and their printed visitor guide.

For the look and feel of the app, we incorporated the “America’s Favorite Road Trip” brand from BHBL and the iconic imagery of the Black Hills and Badlands.

To avoid duplicated effort, we set up way to import the business listings from their business management system and merge these listings with other visitor guide content from the Nomad content management system (CMS).

The app launched on iOS and Android in 2011, and has seen steady growth in users each season.

Response to the app from travelers has been great. Here are some highlights:

“This is a KILLER App! The business content helped me find off season lodging and two for two great eats so far. Can’t wait to use it this summer on another visit here. Locals must love it too.” –Road Trip Lifer

“Vacationed with the family and didn’t see this app till our last day. But because of it we went to Sitting Bull Crystal Caverns. So unique. The app is definitely one of the best I have ever seen.” –Drawer13

“This app will be great for my visit this summer. Wow! I didn’t know there was so much to do. I might extend my vacation. Awesome app! Very helpful!” –Mr. Travel
